The short version
Changing Line is a free tool for casting the I Ching and obtaining an AI-assisted interpretation for reflection. It may be useful, but it may also be incomplete, inaccurate, inconsistent, or simply wrong. It does not predict the future, discover hidden facts, or replace your own judgment or qualified professional advice.
You may use the service and your own readings for personal, educational, reflective, and other lawful purposes. You may also use ideas or insights from a reading in your own work. You may not copy, scrape, repackage, sell, license, or commercially exploit Changing Line itself, its original written material, its interpretive framework, its prompts, its structured reading format, or a collection of its outputs. You may not present Changing Line or its material as your own service or use it to build a competing product.
By using Changing Line, you agree to the full terms below.
1. What Changing Line provides
Changing Line consists of a web-based I Ching casting tool and an associated AI-assisted interpretation experience (together, the “Service”). The Service is intended to support reflection, perspective-taking, and thoughtful consideration of a situation.
Changing Line offers a contemporary interpretive approach informed by the I Ching tradition. It is not a new translation of the ancient Chinese text, an official or definitive interpretation, or a claim of supernatural authority.
2. Symbolic reflection—not prediction or fact
I Ching castings and interpretations are symbolic and interpretive. They do not establish facts, reveal another person’s private thoughts or intentions, guarantee outcomes, or reliably predict future events.
A reading may suggest questions, patterns, tensions, possibilities, or alternative perspectives. You are responsible for deciding whether any part of it is relevant and for checking important factual assumptions independently.
3. AI-generated interpretations and possible errors
Some portions of the Service are generated or assisted by artificial intelligence. AI output can be inaccurate, misleading, incomplete, repetitive, inconsistent, outdated, or unsuitable for your circumstances. The same or similar input may produce different output at different times.
Neither Changing Line nor any AI provider guarantees the accuracy, completeness, reliability, originality, availability, or usefulness of a reading. You must review the output critically before relying on it, acting on it, or sharing it. Use of the Service and its output is at your own risk.
4. Not professional advice
The Service does not provide medical, mental-health, legal, financial, investment, tax, safety, crisis, or other professional advice. A casting or interpretation is not evidence on which to base a high-stakes decision.
Do not delay seeking qualified professional help, disregard professional advice, stop treatment, make an investment, enter or end a legal arrangement, or take or avoid a safety-critical action because of a reading. If you believe that you or someone else may be in immediate danger, contact local emergency services or an appropriate crisis resource rather than using the Service.
5. Your decisions and responsibility
You remain solely responsible for:
- the questions, context, and other information you submit;
- evaluating a reading and verifying relevant facts;
- decisions or actions you take or do not take;
- how you use or share any output; and
- obtaining any professional advice appropriate to your situation.
Do not use a reading to pressure, diagnose, accuse, manipulate, threaten, or make consequential decisions for another person. Do not claim that a reading proves what another person thinks, feels, has done, or will do.
6. Personal information and sensitive content
Do not submit information that you do not have the right to share. Avoid including confidential information or unnecessary identifying, medical, financial, legal, or similarly sensitive details about yourself or anyone else.
The interpretation portion of the Service may operate through a third-party AI platform. Information you send there is handled under that platform’s own terms and privacy practices. Changing Line does not control the platform’s processing, retention, availability, or security.
Please review the Changing Line Privacy Policy for information about the website’s own data practices.
7. Permitted use
Subject to these Terms, you may:
- use the Service for your own personal, reflective, educational, or other lawful purposes;
- save, print, or share an individual reading for personal or noncommercial use, with reasonable attribution when shared publicly;
- discuss or critique the Service; and
- use ideas or insights you receive from a reading in your own original life, writing, artwork, research, business, or other work.
Changing Line does not claim ownership of your question, personal context, or independently created work, and it does not claim royalties from work you create after using the Service.
These permissions do not grant a right to reproduce or commercially exploit Changing Line itself or its protected material.
8. Prohibited copying, resale, and commercial exploitation
Unless you receive prior written permission, you may not:
- sell, sublicense, rent, monetize, or charge others for access to the Service or substantially unchanged readings generated through it;
- operate a paid reading, coaching, consulting, content, or other service that uses Changing Line as its underlying or substantially reproduced product;
- copy, reproduce, republish, distribute, translate, adapt, or create derivative versions of substantial portions of the Service’s original text, interpretive material, prompts, structured reading format, design, code, or documentation;
- scrape, crawl, harvest, systematically download, or assemble a dataset, archive, corpus, knowledge base, or output collection from the Service;
- use the Service or its materials to train, fine-tune, evaluate, benchmark, seed, or develop another AI system, interpretive product, website, app, custom GPT, or competing service;
- remove ownership notices or falsely claim authorship, sponsorship, endorsement, affiliation, or official status;
- use the Changing Line name, branding, visual identity, or confusingly similar identifiers for another product or service; or
- help another person do any of the above.
Brief quotation for commentary, criticism, or other uses permitted by applicable law is not prohibited by these Terms. Nothing in these Terms limits rights that cannot lawfully be restricted, including applicable fair-use rights.
9. Intellectual property
The I Ching is an ancient work with a long public cultural and textual history. Changing Line does not claim ownership of the I Ching itself, its traditional hexagrams, trigrams, line structures, or ideas that are in the public domain.
Changing Line’s original expression—including its contemporary commentary, explanations, selection and arrangement of material, original prompts and instructions, structured reading format, website design, graphics, branding, and software—is owned by Changing Line or its respective licensors and is protected to the extent allowed by law.
References to third-party translations, platforms, trademarks, or other materials do not transfer ownership of those materials. All rights in third-party material remain with their respective owners.
10. Your submissions
You retain whatever rights you hold in information you submit. You represent that you have the right to submit it and that doing so does not violate another person’s rights or applicable law.
You grant the operators and technical providers of the Service only the permissions reasonably necessary to receive, transmit, process, and display your submission and provide the requested functionality, subject to the applicable Privacy Policy and third-party terms.
11. Acceptable use
You may not misuse the Service, interfere with its operation or security, attempt unauthorized access, bypass usage limits or safeguards, introduce malicious code, impersonate another person, or use the Service unlawfully or to harm others.
Access may be limited or blocked when reasonably necessary to protect the Service, its users, its operators, or others.
12. Third-party services and links
The Service may rely on or link to services operated by others, including an AI platform, hosting provider, donation service, and contact-form provider. Those services are governed by their own terms and privacy policies. Changing Line does not control and is not responsible for their content, conduct, availability, security, accuracy, or data practices.
Changing Line is an independent project and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by OpenAI or any other third-party provider unless explicitly stated.
13. Availability, changes, and termination
The Service is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis. Features may change, malfunction, become unavailable, or be discontinued at any time. Access may be suspended or terminated for misuse or violation of these Terms.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Changing Line disclaims all express or implied warranties, including warranties of accuracy, reliability, availability, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, noninfringement, and any warranty arising from a course of dealing or usage.
14. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Changing Line and its owner, operators, contributors, and service providers will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages; loss of profits, data, goodwill, opportunities, or anticipated benefits; or personal, professional, financial, relational, emotional, or other consequences arising from or related to the Service, a reading, reliance on an output, inability to use the Service, or third-party services.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the total aggregate liability arising from or related to the Service will not exceed the greater of (a) the amount you paid directly to Changing Line for use of the Service during the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim or (b) US $100.
Some jurisdictions do not allow certain warranty exclusions or liability limitations. In those jurisdictions, these provisions apply only to the maximum extent permitted by law.
15. Donations
Any voluntary donation supports the project; it does not purchase a reading, subscription, guarantee, professional service, ownership interest, license to commercially exploit the Service, or entitlement to continued availability or particular results. Unless required by law or expressly stated otherwise, donations are nonrefundable.
16. Changes to these Terms
These Terms may be updated as the Service evolves. The effective date at the top of this page will be revised when changes are posted. Your continued use of the Service after revised Terms take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
17. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Any dispute that is not subject to a different legally required forum will be brought in a court of competent jurisdiction located in New York, New York, and you consent to that court’s jurisdiction and venue.
18. Severability and entire agreement
If any provision of these Terms is found unenforceable, it will be enforced to the maximum extent permitted and the remaining provisions will remain in effect. These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy and any other notices expressly incorporated here, form the agreement governing your use of the Service.
19. Contact
Questions, permission requests, or concerns about these Terms may be submitted through the Contact form on the Changing Line website.
